Major hostilities of WWI were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice. November 11th officially became known as Armistice Day through an act of Congress in 1926, in 1938 it became a national holiday and in 1954 Congress amended the act replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans" and November 11th has been known as Veterans Day ever since. Veterans Day is a day to honor all American veterans and to thank them for the service to our country.
